History & Overview
Origin and historical development
The Calupoh, also called the Mexican Wolfdog, goes back more than two thousand years. The American Kennel Club records that it was developed in pre-Hispanic Mexico by crossing native grey wolves with domesticated dogs.
The dogs that resulted were not working animals in the ordinary sense. They were held to be sacred and were used in temple ceremonies meant to bring good fortune and prosperity.
The modern breed is a reconstruction of that ancient type, and it is a large one, with males of 24 to 29 inches and females of 22 to 27. The AKC records it in the Foundation Stock Service.
