History & Overview
Origin and historical development
The Great Anglo-French White and Orange Hound belongs to the group of French pack hounds built on English blood. The Société Centrale Canine dates the first crosses between English and French hounds to the sixteenth century, and records that the all-terrain pack hound they produced came into its own towards the end of the nineteenth century under the great masters of the hunt.
Its FCI standard is the most recently revised of the Grand Anglo-Français group, with the current text valid from 1 August 2023. The breed is classed among the large-sized hounds and is judged with a working trial.
The French kennel club sums up the cross in one line: the English blood brought construction, bone and vigour, the French blood the nose and the voice. The result is described as a hound passionate about hunting, hardy, powerful, fast, courageous and tenacious, able to work over any ground, and used on red deer, roe deer, wild boar and fox.

What is the difference between the Grand and the Medium-sized Anglo-French hounds?
They are separate breeds with separate standards. The Grand Anglo-Français hounds are the large pack hounds used in mounted hunting.
What colour is the coat?
Lemon-and-white or orange-and-white. As with the French hound of the same colour, the orange must not be so dark that it reads as red.
How large is it?
The standard gives 60 to 70 cm at the withers, and the French kennel club puts the weight at 30 to 35 kg.
Is it a suitable town dog?
No. The Société Centrale Canine is explicit that Anglo-French hounds are pack dogs that live in kennels and need space and exercise.
