Origin and historical development
The Lucas Terrier was born in the field rather than the parlour. The American Kennel Club traces it to Major Sir Jocelyn Lucas, a British hunter, author and Member of Parliament, in the first part of the twentieth century.
The cross was deliberate. Lucas put the drive and substance of the Sealyham Terrier together with the spirit and small size of the Norfolk Terrier, both of them hunting breeds, to get a terrier that could work and still live easily with people.
The AKC records the breed in the Foundation Stock Service.
