📖

History & Overview

Origin and historical development

The Redbone is one of six hounds American settlers developed to keep a steady supply of raccoon meat and fur coming as the young country spread south and west.

Popular culture tends to show coonhounds asleep on a porch. The American Kennel Club makes the opposite point: anyone who has been out on a night hunt after the nocturnal raccoon will describe the Redbone and its cousins as among the most tireless and tenacious dogs there are.

The breed is the solid red one of the group, and it is a large hound, with males of 22 to 27 inches and females of 21 to 26.
