About the Club

Information and activities

The Royal Schipperkes Club de Belgique (RSCB) stands as the oldest breed association in Belgium, boasting a rich history that dates back to its founding on March 4, 1888. Officially affiliated with the Royal Cynological Union Saint-Hubert under registration number 001, the club was honored with the prestigious title of 'Royal' in 1930. The organization is dedicated to uniting enthusiasts of the Schipperke breed and actively promoting and protecting the interests of these unique dogs.

Core Mission and Activities

The primary mission of the RSCB is to serve as a central hub for Schipperke lovers, providing resources and fostering a community around the breed. To support its members, the club publishes a bilingual magazine and organizes various events throughout the year. Key activities include:

  • The annual Championship Club Match, which serves as a highlight for breeders and owners.
  • Organized club walks that encourage socialization and community engagement.
  • Providing expert information on the breed's history, standards, and care.

The Breed: The Schipperke

The club focuses exclusively on the Schipperke, a Belgian breed originating from the regions around Brussels and Leuven. Historically known as the 'little shepherd,' the breed gained popularity in the late 17th century and was famously favored by Queen Marie-Henriette of Belgium in 1885. The RSCB highlights the breed's distinct characteristics:

  • Physical Traits: Recognized as the world's smallest shepherd dog, the Schipperke is robust, standing approximately 32 cm tall with a weight typically between 4 and 7 kg. They are known for their jet-black, medium-length coat, which features a distinctive collar, mane, and culottes.
  • Temperament: They are described as alert, curious, and highly intelligent. Despite their small size, they possess the heart of a guardian, making them excellent watchdogs for families in both urban and rural settings.
  • Care and Longevity: The breed is noted for being low-maintenance regarding grooming, requiring only regular brushing. They are generally healthy, with a life expectancy of 13 to 16 years.

Membership

The RSCB welcomes new members who share a passion for the breed. The annual membership fee for residents of Belgium is 30 EUR for a primary member and 15 EUR for a family member. For international members, the fee is 35 EUR for a primary member and 15 EUR for a family member. Interested individuals can join the club by completing the official application form provided by the organization.
