About the Club
Information and activities
The Golden Retriever Club of Canada (GRCC) serves as the official national breed club recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club. Dedicated exclusively to the Golden Retriever, the organization is committed to the preservation, promotion, and protection of the breed. The club plays a vital role in maintaining the standards and welfare of Golden Retrievers across the country, ensuring that their wonderful temperament, working ability, and handsome appearance are upheld for future generations.
History and Governance
The roots of the organization trace back to 1958 with the formation of the Golden Retriever Club of Ontario, which held its inaugural meeting at the home of Harold Sherlock. Founding members included Jutta Baker, Mel and Bob Angrove, John McNichol, and Harold Sherlock. Today, the GRCC is governed by a formal Constitution and a set of By-laws. The club is managed by a Board of Directors, which includes executive officers and five Regional Directors who represent the interests of local breed clubs across the Atlantic Provinces, Quebec, Ontario, The Prairies and Northwest Territories, Alberta, and British Columbia and The Yukon.
Core Mission and Standards
The GRCC is deeply invested in educating the public and its members about the breed. This includes providing guidance on the history of the Golden Retriever—which originated in Scotland and England in the mid-19th century—and clarifying breed standards, such as the correct coat texture and appearance. The club actively addresses modern trends, such as the marketing of 'English Cream' Golden Retrievers, to ensure potential owners have accurate information. Members of the club are required to adhere to a strict Code of Ethics (COE), which promotes responsible ownership and breeding practices.
Activities and Events
The club facilitates a variety of activities to engage the community and celebrate the breed, including:
- National Specialty: An annual flagship event that showcases the best of the breed, with the 2026 edition scheduled for East St. Paul, Manitoba.
- Educational Resources: The club publishes articles of interest regarding breed health, grooming, and history.
- Event Coordination: The GRCC maintains an event calendar to keep members informed of regional and national gatherings.
- Advocacy: Serving as a bridge between local clubs and the Canadian Kennel Club to ensure a unified voice for Golden Retriever enthusiasts nationwide.
