About the Club
Information and activities
The Keeshond Club of Canada (KCC) is a national organization dedicated to the welfare, promotion, and preservation of the Keeshond breed. Established on November 22, 1971, the club was founded by a passionate group of enthusiasts—Jean and Pat Croken, Linda Elliott (Zakowski), Rosella Helwig, Don and Ethel MacKenzie, and Sid Estrin—with the shared vision of creating a unified community for Keeshond owners and breeders across the country. The club was officially registered with the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) on the same day it was founded.
Core Mission and Objectives
The primary mission of the KCC is to provide a collaborative environment where members can work together toward the betterment of the Keeshond breed. The club is committed to several key objectives:
- Breed Standards: Encouraging and promoting the breeding and exhibiting of Keeshonden that adhere strictly to the Official Canadian Breed Standard.
- Health and Temperament: Advocating for the production of structurally sound dogs with correct temperaments. The club emphasizes the importance of eliminating hereditary health issues through judicious selection and rigorous testing of all breeding stock.
- Education: Serving as a resource for both fanciers and judges by providing educational materials, including a detailed Breed Standard Presentation and historical documentation.
- Competition: Fostering a spirit of sportsmanlike competition in various canine disciplines, including conformation dog shows, obedience, rally-o, and agility trials.
Club Activities and Resources
The Keeshond Club of Canada acts as a central hub for the breed in Canada. It facilitates connections between prospective owners and reputable, dedicated breeders through a provincial directory available on their website. Furthermore, the club celebrates the history and success of the breed by maintaining archives of National Specialty winners and hosting a members' photo gallery. By providing a platform for equal representation, the KCC ensures that the interests of the breed are protected and advanced through the collective efforts of its members, regional directors, and executive leadership. Whether through educational outreach or the promotion of responsible breeding practices, the club remains a cornerstone for the Keeshond community in Canada.
