About the Club

Information and activities

Kinološki klub Tornjak (KKT) serves as a dedicated organization focused on the preservation, promotion, and standardization of the Tornjak, an indigenous shepherd dog breed originating from the mountainous regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina, particularly the Vlašić mountain area. With a history spanning over a millennium, the breed was historically documented as Canis montanus. The club plays a pivotal role in maintaining the integrity of this noble, powerful, and resilient breed, which has historically served as a guardian of livestock and property.

Core Mission and History

The club's mission is rooted in the formal recognition and protection of the Tornjak. Following the formation of a specialized commission of cynological judges, the breed was officially registered as the "Bosnian-Herzegovinian Shepherd Dog - Tornjak" on May 9, 1981. The club was instrumental in the standardization process, which was finalized in Travnik on October 5, 1990. A significant milestone occurred on February 22, 2006, when the FCI General Committee accepted the Tornjak into the nomenclature of FCI-recognized breeds, allowing it to compete in national and international exhibitions.

Breed Characteristics and Standards

The Tornjak is defined by its robust, harmonious, and nearly square build. The club emphasizes the following breed standards:

  • Physical Appearance: A dense, long coat with a thick undercoat, featuring a characteristic mane around the neck and a plumed tail. The breed is typically multi-colored or tri-colored, with a preference for distinct color boundaries.
  • Temperament: The Tornjak is described as composed and good-natured toward people, yet cautious and protective when guarding its home, family, or herd. It is highly intelligent, learns quickly, and is known for being a dog that "learns rather than is trained."
  • Morphology: Males typically stand 60 cm or taller, while females are 56 cm or taller. They possess almond-shaped eyes, mobile triangular ears, and a powerful, muscular frame capable of enduring harsh mountain climates.

Activities and Role

The Kinološki klub Tornjak acts as a central hub for enthusiasts, breeders, and researchers. Its activities include:

  • Standardization and Documentation: Maintaining precise records on the breed's history, morphology, and health.
  • Exhibitions: Facilitating participation in national and international CACIB exhibitions, ensuring the breed is evaluated according to the official FCI-approved standards.
  • Education: Providing resources on the care, health, and unique behavioral traits of the Tornjak to ensure the breed's continued vitality and adherence to its historical working qualities.

Through its commitment to these standards, the club ensures that the Tornjak remains a symbol of Bosnian-Herzegovinian heritage, preserving its status as a loyal, incorruptible, and physically resilient guardian.
