About the Club
Information and activities
The Hvid Schweizisk Hyrdehund (White Swiss Shepherd Dog) is a breed represented within the framework of the Danish Kennel Club (DKK). While the breed falls under the broader umbrella of the club for herding, cattle, and farm dogs, it is recognized as a distinct and intelligent breed with a rich history. Originally a color variant of the German Shepherd, the breed gained formal recognition in Denmark in 1996 and was officially approved by the FCI in 2011. The breed is celebrated for its high social competence, protective nature toward its family, and its versatility as both a companion and a working dog.
Core Mission and Breed Characteristics
The mission surrounding the Hvid Schweizisk Hyrdehund is to maintain the health, temperament, and working capabilities of the breed. These dogs are known for being curious, energetic, and highly intelligent. They require significant physical exercise and mental stimulation to thrive. Because of their herding background, they are well-suited for active owners who can provide varied training and consistent engagement. They are not typically aggressive or fearful, making them excellent family dogs when properly socialized and managed.
Activities and Training
Due to their high intelligence and eagerness to learn, these dogs excel in various training programs. They respond best to positive reinforcement, such as praise, treats, and play, rather than repetitive drills which may lead to boredom. Owners are encouraged to participate in DKK-sanctioned activities, including:
- Obedience and agility training
- Mental stimulation exercises
- Participation in exhibitions and official trials
- Working roles, as the breed is utilized in its home country for police, military, and service work
Breeding Rules and Ethical Standards
To ensure the long-term health and quality of the breed, strict breeding requirements are enforced in accordance with DKK standards:
- Health Requirements: Both parents must have an official hip dysplasia (HD) status of A or B registered with the DKK before mating. A dog with grade C may be used only if the partner has an A status.
- Documentation: Male dogs must have documented normal testicle status via a veterinary certificate or official exhibition results.
- Ethical Compliance: All breeders must adhere to the DKK’s ethical guidelines for breeding physically and mentally sound dogs.
- Basis+ Recommendations: For higher-tier registration (Basis+), parents must also have an AD status of 0 or 1 and have achieved a rating of at least 'Very Good' at an FCI/DKK-recognized exhibition.
