About the Club

Information and activities

The Estonian Hound Association, operating under the umbrella of the Estonian Kennel Union, is dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and international recognition of the Estonian Hound (Eesti Hagijas). As the only national dog breed developed in Estonia, this scent hound is celebrated for its sturdy working style, melodic voice, and exceptional hunting capabilities, particularly in tracking hare, fox, and lynx.

History and Development

The breed's history traces back to the 1930s, though a distinct national breed did not exist until the mid-20th century. Following the devastation of World War II, a concerted effort began in 1947 to establish a uniform, small-sized hound suitable for local hunting conditions. By 1954, a standardized type was identified, and the breed was officially recognized by the Soviet Ministry of Agriculture. In the modern era, the Estonian Kennel Union has spearheaded the breed's international journey, achieving provisional recognition from the International Cynological Federation (FCI) in 2019.

Core Mission and Activities

The organization focuses on several key pillars:

  • Breed Preservation: Maintaining the integrity of the Estonian Hound through rigorous stud book management and adherence to the FCI breed standard (last updated in 2007).
  • Cultural Promotion: Integrating the breed into Estonian national identity, exemplified by the 2018 "Estonian 100 Hounds" project and the installation of public statues in Tallinn’s Rotermann Quarter.
  • Breeding Standards: Supporting a network of registered kennels to ensure the health and temperament of the breed, which is known for being an excellent pet in addition to a skilled hunter.

Breeds and Rules

The association is exclusively focused on the Estonian Hound, classified under FCI Group 6 (Scent hounds and related breeds). Breeding practices are governed by the Estonian Kennel Union’s regulations, which emphasize the maintenance of the breed's specific physical and behavioral traits. The association actively monitors population growth, with nearly 1,500 dogs entered into the EST-register since 1991, ensuring that the breed continues to thrive both within Estonia and internationally in countries like Finland, Ukraine, and Russia.
