About the Club
Information and activities
Suomen Mäyräkoiraliitto (SML), also known as Finska Taxklubben (FTK) ry, serves as the primary national organization dedicated to the welfare, breeding, and promotion of dachshunds in Finland. The club acts as a comprehensive resource for owners, breeders, and enthusiasts, providing extensive guidance on the breed's history, health, and versatile working capabilities.
Core Mission and Activities
The organization is committed to maintaining the high standards of the dachshund breed, which is recognized for its unique ability to work both above and below ground. The club's activities are structured around several specialized committees, including those focused on hunting trials, breeding, exhibitions, and health. Key activities include:
- Working Trials: Organizing various tests such as tracking (MEJÄ), hunting trials (MÄAJ), den trials (LUT/LUME), and water retrieval tests (VERI).
- Breeding Support: Providing expert breeding advice, maintaining stud lists, and overseeing the PEVISA program to ensure the health and quality of the breed.
- Education and Information: Publishing the Mäyräkoiramme magazine, maintaining the "MäykkyNet" database, and offering an "Aapinen" (primer) for new owners.
- Health Monitoring: Conducting extensive health surveys and research regarding common breed-specific issues such as spinal health, eye diseases, and skeletal development.
Breeds and Standards
The club covers all variations of the dachshund, which are categorized by three sizes—standard, miniature, and rabbit—and three coat types—smooth-haired, wire-haired, and long-haired. The SML emphasizes the breed's temperament, describing the ideal dachshund as friendly, balanced, and neither shy nor aggressive, while maintaining the passion and agility required for a hunting dog.
Governance and Rules
The SML operates under a structured set of bylaws and is governed by an elected board. The organization maintains transparency through regular general meetings, published minutes, and a clear operational plan. Members are encouraged to participate in the club's democratic processes and adhere to the guidelines set forth for ethical breeding and responsible ownership. The club also recognizes excellence within the community through various awards, including honors for working dogs, junior handlers, and significant contributions to the breed's development.
