About the Club
Information and activities
The Verein für Deutsche Spitze e.V. (VfDS), established in 1899, serves as the primary organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the German Spitz breed in the Federal Republic of Germany. As a long-standing institution, the club is a proud member of the Verband für das Deutsche Hundewesen (VDH), which acts as the umbrella organization for all specialized dog breed clubs in Germany, and through this affiliation, it is also connected to the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI).
The core mission of the VfDS is to oversee the breeding and welfare of various Spitz varieties. The club maintains the official studbook, ensuring that all puppies and imports are properly registered. The breeds and varieties covered by the club include:
- Wolfsspitz (Keeshond)
- Großspitz (Giant Spitz)
- Mittelspitz (Medium Spitz)
- Kleinspitz (Small Spitz)
- Zwergspitz (Pomeranian)
- Japan Spitz
- Volpino Italiano
Breed Characteristics and Philosophy
The VfDS emphasizes that all German Spitz varieties, regardless of size or color, share a common heritage and distinct physical traits. They are renowned for their beautiful coats, characterized by abundant undercoat and long, straight, standing-off top hair. Key features include a mane-like collar, a bushy tail carried boldly over the back, and a fox-like head with alert, intelligent eyes and small, pointed ears.
Beyond their appearance, the club highlights the Spitz's exceptional temperament. They are described as attentive, lively, and deeply devoted to their families. Their high intelligence makes them easy to train, while their natural wariness of strangers and lack of hunting instinct make them excellent guardians for homes and apartments. The VfDS notes that these dogs are neither fearful nor aggressive, adapting seamlessly to both rural and urban environments. Furthermore, the breed is celebrated for its resilience to harsh weather conditions and its remarkable longevity, making the Spitz a steadfast and loyal companion throughout its life.
