About the Club

Information and activities

Nihon Ken Hozonkai (NIPPO), or the Japanese Dog Preservation Society, is a public interest incorporated association dedicated to the protection, research, and promotion of Japan's native dog breeds. Established with the mission of contributing to the advancement of Japanese culture, the organization focuses on the preservation of these dogs as living natural monuments.

History and Mission
The society was founded on the principle of maintaining the essence and ideal physical standards of Japanese dogs. In 1934, NIPPO established the official "Japanese Dog Standard," which categorized these breeds into three sizes: small (Shiba Inu), medium (Kishu, Shikoku, Kai, and Hokkaido), and large (Akita). These breeds have since been designated as national natural monuments by the Ministry of Education, a status the society works tirelessly to uphold.

Core Activities
NIPPO engages in a wide range of activities to ensure the health and longevity of these breeds, including:

  • Registry Maintenance: Managing the official dog registry and issuing pedigrees.
  • Breeding and Improvement: Researching and promoting the improvement of physical traits and capabilities.
  • Exhibitions and Events: Organizing regional and national exhibitions, as well as appreciation meetings to showcase the quality of the dogs.
  • Education and Outreach: Publishing a quarterly newsletter for members, conducting training sessions, and promoting Japanese breeds internationally.

Breeds Covered
The society oversees the six recognized Japanese breeds, all of which are designated as natural monuments: Shiba Inu (1936), Kishu Inu (1934), Shikoku Inu (1937), Kai Ken (1934), Hokkaido Inu (1937), and Akita Inu (1931). While all six are under their purview, the society notes that the Shiba, Kishu, and Shikoku breeds currently have the highest registration numbers.

Rules and Conduct
NIPPO maintains strict standards for its members. The society emphasizes the importance of professional conduct, particularly regarding the use of the internet and social media. They have implemented a zero-tolerance policy toward the dissemination of unfounded slander, defamation, or harassment directed at the organization, its exhibitions, or its judges. Members found violating these standards are subject to strict disciplinary action to protect the integrity of the society and its mission.
