Background and role
Svenska Smålandsstövareföreningen is the Swedish breed club for the Smålandsstövare, the black-and-tan hound of Småland. It was formally founded on 19 April 1969, after a general gathering of owners held in Värnamo the year before, and it works alongside Svenska Stövarklubben and the Swedish Kennel Club.
The club keeps the written history of the breed. Its own account records the Smålandsstövare at Sweden's first dog show in 1886, where a dog named Clerry became the first dog ever exhibited in the country, and it names the people who held the old type together in the early twentieth century, among them Baron Fredrik J. von Essen of Strömsberg. The first Swedish standard was drawn up in 1921 and the first dog entered in the Swedish Kennel Club register in 1922.
Its work is divided between hunting and breeding rather than the show ring alone. The club runs hunting trials, a breeding committee and a stud-dog list, publishes the breeding programme and gives breeding advice, and awards a mating subsidy. It is organised in local branches across Sweden, from Norrbotten in the north to Skåne in the south, with further branches in Finland, Norway and Åland.
The board elected at the 2025 club meeting is chaired by Roger Nilsson.
