About the Club

Information and activities

The Belgian Shepherd Dog Association of Great Britain (BSDA of GB) is a premier organization dedicated to the welfare, promotion, and preservation of the Belgian Shepherd breed. Established with a rich history, the Association celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015, marking half a century of commitment to these versatile dogs. The club serves as a central hub for enthusiasts, providing essential resources on breed standards, health information, and expert advice for prospective and current owners.

The Association maintains a comprehensive focus on all four recognized varieties of the Belgian Shepherd, ensuring that each is represented and supported:

  • Groenendael: The long-haired black variety.
  • Tervueren: The long-haired variety, appearing in shades of red, fawn, and grey with a black mask and overlay.
  • Malinois: The short-haired variety, sharing the color profile of the Tervueren.
  • Laekenois: The wire-haired variety, characterized by a reddish-fawn coat with black shading.

Core Mission and Activities: The BSDA of GB is deeply involved in the multifaceted world of the breed, supporting activities ranging from competitive showing and working trials to agility. A cornerstone of the organization is its active Breed Rescue Service, which is dedicated to the welfare of all four varieties, relying on the support and generosity of the community to continue its vital work.

Breeding Regulations: The Association plays a critical role in the Inter Variety Breeding Commission. To ensure the integrity of the breed, the club enforces strict criteria for inter-variety matings in collaboration with the Kennel Club. Breeders seeking approval must submit a formal application including:

  • A detailed letter explaining the rationale for the mating.
  • Comprehensive health test results for hips and eyes for both parents.
  • Full pedigree documentation.
  • Evidence of show or working achievements for the parents or their previous offspring.

The Association emphasizes that all applications must be submitted well in advance to secure Kennel Club permission. Furthermore, to maintain transparency and lineage tracking, puppies resulting from approved inter-variety matings are distinguished in Kennel Club registrations with a specific asterisk system, denoting their generation status. Through these rigorous standards and community-focused initiatives, the BSDA of GB continues to be a pillar of support for the Belgian Shepherd community in the United Kingdom.
