About the Club

Information and activities

The Northern Dachshund Association (NDA) is a dedicated organization operating within the United Kingdom, committed to the preservation and promotion of the Dachshund breed. As an organization deeply invested in the welfare and quality of these unique hounds, the NDA aligns its standards with international practices to ensure that breeders and judges maintain the integrity of the breed's traditional form and function.

History and Origins

The Dachshund, originating from Germany, has a rich history dating back to the 17th century. Originally bred as a sturdy, short-legged hunter for badgers and small game, the breed's name is derived from the German words "dachs" (badger) and "hund" (dog). Over centuries, the breed evolved into three distinct coat varieties: the smooth-haired, the long-haired, and the wire-haired, the latter of which was officially recognized in 1890.

Core Mission and Breed Standards

The core mission of the association is to provide clear guidelines for breeders and judges to ensure the health, welfare, and soundness of the Dachshund. The organization emphasizes that any departure from the established breed standard—which describes the dog as "half-a-dog high and a dog-and-a-half long"—should be viewed as a fault. The goal is to preserve the breed's intelligence, courage, and physical capability, ensuring they remain suited for their traditional work both above and below ground.

Breeds and Varieties Covered

The NDA focuses exclusively on the Dachshund, recognizing two primary size categories for exhibition:

  • Standard: Dogs weighing over 11 pounds and up to 25 pounds.
  • Miniature: Dogs weighing up to 11 pounds, with an ideal weight of 10 pounds.

These sizes are further categorized by their three distinct coat types: Short-Haired (Smooth), Wire-Haired, and Long-Haired. Each variety is evaluated based on strict criteria regarding head shape, body structure, coat texture, and color patterns, including one-colored, two-colored, dappled, and striped variations.

Rules and Judging

The association adheres to rigorous judging standards. Major faults include structural weaknesses such as a waddling gait, splayed paws, or poor angulation, while disqualifications are strictly enforced for issues such as viciousness, extreme shyness, or albinism. The organization maintains that because the Dachshund is a working hunting dog, scars from honorable wounds are not considered faults, reflecting a deep respect for the breed's heritage and active nature.
