About the Club
Information and activities
The Smooth Haired Dachshund Club (SHDC) holds the distinction of being the first club in the world dedicated exclusively to the Smooth and Miniature Smooth Dachshund breeds. Operating as a national organization, the club serves as a welcoming community for breeders, exhibitors, and enthusiasts, with a particular emphasis on supporting newcomers to the breed.
History and Foundation
The club's origins date back approximately twenty-four years, born from the vision of a dedicated group of breeders and exhibitors who recognized the need for a specialized breed club. Under the leadership of Chairman Lovaine Coxon, the initiative gained significant momentum following a pivotal meeting with Terry Thorn, who championed the cause. The club officially held its first open show in 2002. A major milestone was reached in 2010 when the club hosted its first Championship Show, featuring the awarding of Challenge Certificates for Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshunds. By 2014, the club expanded its reach by awarding its first set of tickets for the Smooth variety. In 2022, the organization proudly celebrated its 20th anniversary.
Core Mission and Activities
The SHDC is committed to the promotion and welfare of Smooth and Miniature Smooth Dachshunds. The club facilitates this through a variety of activities, most notably the organization of Championship and Open shows. These events serve as a platform for showcasing the breed, maintaining high standards of conformation, and fostering sportsmanship among exhibitors. The club maintains a strong sense of community, evidenced by the widespread support and active participation of its members in meetings and events.
Governance and Standards
The club operates under a structured framework to ensure the integrity of the breed and the conduct of its members. Key aspects of their governance include:
- Code of Ethics: The club maintains a formal Code of Ethics to guide the behavior and breeding practices of its members.
- Rules and Regulations: Comprehensive rules are in place to govern the club's operations and show procedures.
- Leadership: The club honors its heritage through tributes to its past leadership, including its Patron, Percy Norton (Matzell), and its President, Betty Munt (Pipersvale).
