About the Club

Information and activities

The American Hairless Terrier Club of America (AHTCA) serves as the official organization dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and responsible ownership of the American Hairless Terrier. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit entity, the club is committed to advancing the breed's natural qualities to perfection in strict accordance with established breed standards.

History and Origins
The American Hairless Terrier originated in the Southern United States as a natural variation of the Rat Terrier. The breed's foundation dates back to the early 1970s, following the birth of a hairless female puppy named Josephine. Josephine was gifted to Edwin and Willie Scott of Louisiana, whose dedication to this unique puppy established the lineage for the entire breed. Since January 1, 2016, the American Hairless Terrier has been officially recognized to compete within the AKC Terrier Group.

Breed Characteristics and Varieties
The AHT is celebrated for its intelligence, lively temperament, and friendly nature, making it an ideal companion. Notably, the breed is often favored by individuals with allergies due to its hairless nature. The club recognizes two distinct varieties:

  • Hairless Variety: A completely hairless dog, though some individuals may possess eyebrows and whiskers.
  • Coated Variety: Often referred to by fanciers as the "Coated Carrier," this variety carries the hairless gene. The club maintains strict standards, noting that a coated dog lacking a full coat is considered a serious fault.

Club Mission and Activities
The AHTCA focuses on fostering excellence in both conformation and performance. The club provides extensive resources for members and enthusiasts, including:

  • Performance and Education: The club promotes participation in obedience, agility, and other performance events, highlighting the breed's trainability and drive.
  • Resources: The AHTCA maintains an illustrated breed standard, a pedigree database, and a breeder directory to ensure the health and integrity of the breed.
  • Community Engagement: Through national events, banquets, and the recognition of versatility and Register of Merit (ROM) recipients, the club fosters a strong community of dedicated owners.
  • Standards and Ethics: Members are expected to adhere to the AKC Sportsmanship Code, ensuring that all breeding and ownership practices prioritize the welfare of the dogs.

For those interested in the breed or club membership, the AHTCA provides ongoing support through its official website, educational materials, and direct communication with the club secretary.
