About the Club

Information and activities

The Great Dane Club of Greater Dallas (GDCGD) is a dedicated organization established in 1967 to foster goodwill, education, and mentorship within the Great Dane community. As an official affiliate of the Great Dane Club of America and accredited by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in December 1967, the club serves as a hub for enthusiasts to preserve the integrity and standards of the breed.

Core Mission and Values

The GDCGD is built upon a foundation of inclusivity, diversity, and respect. Its primary mission is to protect the interests of the Great Dane through:

  • Health and Welfare: Prioritizing genetic health, structural integrity, and temperament through mandatory health testing.
  • Responsible Breeding: Adhering to ethical protocols and the Great Dane Club of America’s Breeder’s Code of Ethics.
  • Education: Providing accurate information to the public and guiding newcomers on breed standards and care.
  • Preservation: Maintaining the unique characteristics, type, and function of the breed as defined by official standards.
  • Community Advocacy: Supporting rescue networks and promoting responsible ownership.

Activities and Events

The club is highly active in the DFW area and beyond, hosting a variety of events that showcase the versatility of the Great Dane. These include:

  • Conformation Shows: The club has held annual specialty shows since 1970, providing a platform to evaluate dogs against the official breed standard.
  • Performance Trials: The GDCGD is licensed to host trials in Rally, Obedience, and FAST CAT.
  • Community Engagement: Members participate in therapy dog work, agility, lure coursing, dock diving, scent work, and local community celebrations.
  • Educational Forums: Monthly meetings feature discussions on medical treatments, judging seminars, and service projects.

Membership and Rules

Membership is open to those interested in the breed, with no requirement to own or show a dog. The club offers a welcoming environment for both local and non-regular members who reside outside the immediate Dallas area. While the club encourages ethical breeding practices, it does not mandate that members breed their dogs. Members are expected to adhere to safety rules during club-sanctioned events and are encouraged to participate in the club's mission of education and advocacy. The GDCGD meets monthly, and guests are always welcome to attend these public meetings to learn more about the breed and the organization.
