He and his wife Renate have bred terriers under the kennel name von Steinberg since 1980, registered with the Klub für Terrier e.V., first in Wetzlar-Steindorf before relocating to Burbach in 1988. They bred the West Highland White Terrier until 2010, then turned to the Jack Russell Terrier from 2006 once it gained independent FCI recognition.
