About the School
Information, training methods and courses
The Department of Animal, Veterinary and Food Sciences (AVFS) at the University of Idaho (UIdaho) is dedicated to the sustainable care and production of livestock and animal populations. The department provides students with a comprehensive education focused on animal nutrition, genetics, reproduction, and welfare. Through a blend of rigorous academic coursework and hands-on practical experience, the program prepares students for diverse careers in the animal and veterinary sciences.
Academic Programs and Veterinary Preparation
The department offers four distinct undergraduate options within the Animal and Veterinary Science degree, allowing students to tailor their studies to specific career goals:
- Pre-Veterinary Option: Specifically designed to fulfill the undergraduate academic requirements for admission into a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program.
- Dairy Option: Focuses on the physiology of lactation and the management of modern dairy operations.
- Production Option: Emphasizes reproduction and nutrition, utilizing facilities like the Steer-A-Year Feedlot.
- Business Option: Integrates animal science topics with business fundamentals for careers in the livestock industry.
A significant highlight of the UIdaho program is its cooperative partnership with Washington State University (WSU). This collaboration facilitates the WIMU Veterinary Degree Program, which allows 11 Idaho residents annually to be admitted to the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine without paying out-of-state tuition. Furthermore, the department offers advanced graduate studies, including Master of Science degrees in Animal Science and a Ph.D. program in Animal Physiology.
Research and Facilities
Students benefit from extensive on-campus and state-wide facilities that serve as learning laboratories. These include the U of I Dairy Center, beef and sheep centers, and the Vandal Brand Meats laboratory, which provides industry-standard equipment for meat science training. Research initiatives are robust, covering critical areas such as ruminant nutrition, herd health, reproductive physiology, and livestock genomics. The department also maintains strong relationships with external research entities, including the United States Sheep Experiment Station and the USDA Animal Disease Research Unit, ensuring that students and faculty remain at the forefront of animal health and production science.
Student Engagement
Beyond the classroom, the department fosters a vibrant community through various student-led organizations. These include the Pre-Vet Club, the Dairy Club, the Polo Club, the Rodeo Club, and the Block and Bridle club, all of which provide students with opportunities to network, gain leadership experience, and engage deeply with their chosen fields of animal science.
