The Department of Animal and Avian Sciences (ANSC) at the University of Maryland (UMD) serves as a center for the study of domesticated animals, focusing on their roles in food production, biomedical research, and leisure. The department traces its institutional history to 1983, when the Department of Animal Sciences was established through the merger of Dairy Science and Animal Science. This evolved further in 1997 with the integration of the Department of Poultry Science, resulting in the current Department of Animal and Avian Sciences.
