About the Club
Information and activities
The Verband Deutscher Kleinhundezüchter e.V. (VK), founded in 1948, stands as the oldest studbook-keeping association for small dog breeds within the VDH (Verband für das Deutsche Hundewesen) and the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale). Operating under the motto "All under one roof," the organization is dedicated to the preservation and responsible breeding of a wide variety of small dog breeds.
Core Mission and Breeding Standards
The primary objective of the VK is to promote the breeding of healthy, breed-typical, and stable-tempered small dogs that adhere strictly to FCI standards. The association enforces some of the most rigorous regulations and control mechanisms in the industry. Breeders are expected to integrate their dogs into a domestic, family-oriented environment, and the club maintains the right to conduct unannounced inspections of breeding facilities to ensure compliance with animal welfare, hygiene, and socialization standards.
Breeds Covered
The VK oversees an extensive list of breeds, including:
- Bichon Frisé, Bolognese, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Chihuahua (Short and Long-haired), Havanese, Löwchen, Maltese, Pug, Papillon, Phalène, Prague Ratter (provisional FCI), Russkiy Toy (Smooth and Long-haired), Schipperke, Shih Tzu, and the Belgian, Brabant, and Brussels Griffons.
- Additionally, the club maintains national VDH studbooks for the Russisch Bolonka Zwetna and the Biewer Terrier.
Rules and Health Protocols
The VK implements a strict Breeding Approval Examination (ZZP). To qualify, a dog must first achieve a show rating of at least "Very Good." Furthermore, all breeding stock must be certified free of Patella Luxation. Depending on the breed, additional health screenings are mandatory, such as eye examinations for PRA and cataracts, heart screenings for Cavaliers, and BOAS testing for Pugs. Puppies are inspected by a breed warden before release, ensuring they are vaccinated, microchipped, and raised in appropriate conditions.
Activities and Support
Beyond breeding oversight, the VK serves as a lifelong resource for puppy owners. Breeders are encouraged to provide ongoing support regarding nutrition, training, and socialization. The association also manages exhibition activities, issues champion titles, and provides a comprehensive breeder directory to help prospective owners find reputable, VDH-controlled sources, thereby actively campaigning against illegal puppy trade practices.
