About the Club
Information and activities
The Verband Deutscher Kleinhundezüchter e.V. (VK), founded in 1948, stands as the oldest studbook-keeping association for small dog breeds within the VDH (Verband für das Deutsche Hundewesen) and the FCI. Operating under the motto "All under one roof," the organization is dedicated to the professional and ethical breeding of a wide variety of small dog breeds, ensuring they remain healthy, typical of their breed, and sound in temperament.
Core Mission and Breeding Standards
The primary objective of the VK is to promote the breeding of healthy, stable, and breed-standard-compliant small dogs. Breeders associated with the VK are subject to some of the most stringent regulations and controls globally. This includes mandatory integration of breeding dogs into a domestic, family-oriented environment. The association enforces strict oversight, including unannounced inspections of breeding facilities to ensure proper housing, nutrition, and socialization of puppies.
Breeds Covered
The VK oversees a diverse range of breeds, including:
- Bichon Frisé, Bolognese, Havanese, Löwchen, and Maltese
- Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Chihuahua (Long and Short-haired), and Papillon/Phalène
- Pug, Schipperke, Shih Tzu, and Prague Rattler
- Russkiy Toy (Long and Short-haired) and Zwerggriffons (Belgian, Brussels, and Brabanter)
- National studbook breeds: Russisch Bolonka Zwetna and Biewer Terrier
Rules and Health Requirements
The VK maintains rigorous health and quality control protocols. Before a dog can be admitted for breeding, it must pass a Zuchtzulassungsprüfung (breeding suitability test) and achieve a minimum rating of "Very Good" at an exhibition. Mandatory health screenings include:
- Patella Luxation (PL) certification for all breeds.
- Breed-specific tests such as eye examinations (PRA, Cataract) for Papillons, Phalènes, and Havanese.
- Heart examinations for Cavaliers and BOAS/stress tests for Pugs.
Activities and Community
Beyond breeding oversight, the VK manages exhibition titles and championships, providing members with resources for dog sports and competitive showing. The association is a staunch advocate against illegal puppy trading, urging prospective owners to source their pets exclusively from reputable, VDH-controlled breeders listed in their official directory.
