Following an inaugural meeting at Crufts in 1960 with 15 attendees, the club received official Kennel Club approval in April of that same year. Early leadership, including President Mrs. Thelma Gray and Treasurer Mary MacPhail, focused on establishing a breed standard that captured the spirit of the German original while adhering to Kennel Club guidelines. A significant milestone was achieved in 1966 when the club successfully secured a separate register for the breed, allowing for the awarding of Challenge Certificates.
