About the Club
Information and activities
The Rottweiler Club (TRC), established in 1960, holds the distinction of being the first specialist club dedicated to the Rottweiler breed in the United Kingdom. Since its inception, the organization has been committed to promoting the well-being and positive public image of the breed, ensuring its noble and intelligent characteristics are preserved for future generations.
History and Evolution
The club was born out of a growing interest in the breed during the late 1950s. Following an inaugural meeting at Crufts in 1960 with 15 attendees, the club received official Kennel Club approval in April of that same year. Early leadership, including President Mrs. Thelma Gray and Treasurer Mary MacPhail, focused on establishing a breed standard that captured the spirit of the German original while adhering to Kennel Club guidelines. A significant milestone was achieved in 1966 when the club successfully secured a separate register for the breed, allowing for the awarding of Challenge Certificates.
Core Mission and Activities
The Rottweiler Club remains a cornerstone of the breed community, focusing on health, temperament, and working ability. Key activities and offerings include:
- Shows: The club hosts two annual events, including a Championship Show and an Open Show.
- Temperament and Training: Since 1961, the club has conducted annual Character Tests to ensure the preservation of the breed's stable temperament and working aptitude.
- Community Engagement: The club organizes talks, fun days, and social rallies to foster a sense of community among owners.
- Resources: Members benefit from an annual yearbook, newsletters, and a comprehensive welfare scheme.
Breeds and Membership
The club is exclusively dedicated to the Rottweiler. Over the decades, the organization has grown from its small beginnings into a complex entity that has helped spawn ten other breed clubs nationwide. The club welcomes new members who are interested in supporting the breed and participating in its various events. Membership is open to all, with a straightforward application process managed by the club's membership secretary. By maintaining a strict Code of Ethics and focusing on the long-term health of the breed, The Rottweiler Club continues to serve as a vital resource for owners and enthusiasts across the United Kingdom.
