History and Evolution
The Irish Wolfhound Association of the Carolinas (IWAC), formerly known as the Irish Wolfhound Association of the Mid-South, was established in 1992 by a dedicated group of long-time breeders and owners. The organization transitioned into a 501(c)7 non-profit in 2009. In April 2022, the club achieved official accreditation from the American Kennel Club (AKC), necessitating a name change to better represent the geographic distribution of its membership base.
Core Mission and Objectives
The club is deeply committed to the preservation and well-being of the Irish Wolfhound. Its primary objectives include:
- Encouraging and sponsoring comprehensive education regarding the health and welfare of the breed.
- Promoting responsible, high-quality breeding practices that align strictly with the standards set forth by the Irish Wolfhound Club of America (IWCA) and the American Kennel Club (AKC).
- Supporting the vital efforts of Irish Wolfhound Rescue of the Mid South (IWRMS) to provide rescue and placement services across North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi.
Activities and Educational Outreach
IWAC serves as a hub for breed education, engaging the public through regional St. Patrick's Day parades, Irish and Celtic Heritage Festivals, and various specialty events. These platforms allow the public to interact with the hounds and their owners. Furthermore, the club hosts gatherings throughout the year featuring keynote speakers who specialize in canine behavior and health, ensuring that members remain informed about the latest medical advancements and therapeutic practices.
Health and Welfare Standards
The organization places a high priority on health, actively supporting the Irish Wolfhound Foundation (IWF) and the IWCA in various research initiatives. The club recommends that all breeders adhere to the IWCA’s Standard of Behavior for Breeders. To support the physical health of the breed, IWAC facilitates heart screenings at specialty shows and through partnerships with veterinary institutions, such as the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine. The club is also a staunch advocate for the Five Freedoms of animal welfare, ensuring that every Irish Wolfhound lives a life free from hunger, discomfort, pain, fear, and distress, while being allowed to express normal behaviors.
Rescue Commitment
Recognizing that the Irish Wolfhound is a giant breed with unique financial and geriatric needs, the club works closely with the 501(c)3 non-profit Irish Wolfhound Rescue of the Mid South. Acting as "Guardians of the Breed," they provide confidential assistance to owners facing the difficult decision of rehoming their pets, while also facilitating the adoption process for those looking to provide a new home to a rescue hound.
