About the Club
Information and activities
The Saluki Club of Greater San Francisco (SCGSF) is a premier organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Saluki breed. While geographically centered in Northern California, the club maintains an inclusive community, welcoming Saluki fanciers from across the United States and around the globe. The club holds a rich history, having been officially licensed by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1973. Its roots, however, extend even further back to the group's origins as the Sierra Saluki Club. Notably, the SCGSF holds the distinction of being the second regional Saluki club in the United States to host an annual independent specialty show.
Core Mission and Objectives
The SCGSF is committed to the advancement of the Saluki breed through several key initiatives:
- Breed Excellence: Members strive to perfect the natural qualities of the Saluki by breeding dogs that embody the soundness, temperament, and personality defined by the official AKC breed standard.
- Advocacy and Competition: The club protects the interests of the breed by promoting sportsmanlike competition in various venues, including dog shows, obedience trials, and field trials.
- Welfare: A significant component of the club's mission is the commitment to placing physically and mentally healthy Salukis in need of a home into suitable environments.
- Regulatory Compliance: All sanctioned and licensed events are conducted in strict accordance with the rules and regulations set forth by the American Kennel Club.
Activities and Engagement
The club is highly active, providing numerous opportunities for enthusiasts to engage with the breed. Each year, the SCGSF hosts world-class Saluki Specialties in early October, which serve as a major gathering point for breeders and fanciers from across the country and overseas. Additionally, the club organizes matches, typically held in the spring or summer. These events offer a unique opportunity to observe a large number of Salukis and connect with experienced members of the community. Beyond formal shows, the SCGSF supports a wide range of regional activities, including lure coursing, obedience training, and various social gatherings designed to foster a supportive network for Saluki owners. Whether you are a seasoned breeder or a newcomer interested in learning more about this intriguing breed, the Saluki Club of Greater San Francisco invites you to participate in their events and join their growing community.
