About Sue Bownds
Sue Bownds grew up with dogs from early childhood, when her grandparents bought the family a Beagle.
She is a fourth-generation dog shower: her great-grandparents emigrated from the United Kingdom to New Zealand and both judged there, mainly Terriers.
She began handling in the main ring as a five-year-old junior handler and grew up showing Toys, Terriers, Hounds and Gundogs for her family and for others.
She began judging in 1980 and became an all-breeds judge in 2014; has judged in the USA, UK, Poland, Denmark, Thailand, China, New Zealand, Croatia, Ireland, Germany, the Philippines, the Czech Republic, South Africa, Israel, Finland, Austria and Slovenia.
She judged the Hound Group at the Vereeniging and District Kennel Club championship show in South Africa in 2019, alongside Deborah Harbin, Robert Harbin and Erin Brown.
Judging Credentials
Sue Bownds has been licensed to judge shows since 1980, through Dogs Australia and the FCI.
The licence covers all ten FCI groups.
Dogs Australia lists Bownds as an all-breed judge, entitled to award Best in Show and to act as an accredited assessor.
The judge holds a second registration as well: the American Kennel Club approves Bownds for all seven of its own groups, listing the judge as a visiting judge — Sporting Group, Hound Group, Working Group, Terrier Group, Toy Group, Non-Sporting Group, Herding Group — a separate system from the FCI's, with different breeds in each group.
Dogs Australia also licenses Bownds outside the show ring, for junior handling.
Sue Bownds is listed as an FCI judge under Fédération Cynologique Internationale.
Breeding and Kennel Background
She has spent nearly fifty years as an exhibitor and advocate for purebred dogs, importing from the UK and New Zealand and exporting to the UK, USA, New Zealand and Europe.
The Nangunyah prefix was started by her parents in 1961 and she joined them in 1977; the kennel stayed small, with one or two litters a year.
She won her first Best in Show with a Beagle in 1979, followed by four decades of BIS wins at all-breeds and specialty shows, including Puppy in Show at both the Melbourne and Adelaide Royals.
The last Beagle she campaigned retired in 2016 having won a world record number of all-breeds Best in Show awards for a lemon bitch.
